Unbeknownst to the airport staff, the next flight wasn't until the following day, forcing Paula to spend a night in a detention center, separated from Maia.
The Agonizing Search for Maia
To make matters worse, when it was time for Paula to board her flight back to the Dominican Republic the next morning, she was told that Maia was missing. Distraught and panicked, Paula had no choice but to fly back without her beloved pet. "Maia is more than just a dog to me; she's my constant companion," Paula shared in an interview with CNN. "I take her everywhere with me—she's that well-behaved."
Paula suspected that Maia had managed to break free from her pink travel crate while she was being questioned by immigration officials. The airline offered her $1,800 in compensation for the loss, but that did little to ease her anguish.

She was found hiding near the North Cargo Facilities of the airport, according to a social media post by the airport's operations team. Though tired, Maia appeared to be in good health and was promptly taken to a veterinarian for a check-up.
