Johnny Depp, the iconic actor known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, is reportedly open to working with Disney again, given the right project.
This comes as a surprise to many, considering the turbulent history between the actor and the studio.
The Possibility of a Comeback
According to a source close to Depp, the actor is not against making a comeback at Disney.
The insider stated, "Anything is possible. If it's the right project, he'll do it."
This statement has sparked a wave of speculation about what the future holds for Depp and Disney.
The History of Depp and Disney
Last month, The New York Times reported that Disney was "seemingly inching the door open" to working with Depp again on future "Pirates" sequels.
This comes after Depp's successful defamation trial last year against ex-wife Amber Heard, where the actor's role as Captain Jack Sparrow was a significant point of discussion.
The Fallout and the Future
Depp's relationship with Disney took a hit after the publication of an op-ed by Heard in 2018, where she claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence.
Following this, Depp claimed that Disney had cut ties with him.
However, when asked during the trial if he would work with Disney again for a substantial sum, Depp responded, "That is true," explaining his feeling of betrayal by the studio.
The "Pirates" Franchise: With or Without Depp?
In 2022, producer Jerry Bruckheimer remained noncommittal about Depp's return to the "Pirates" franchise. The team was reportedly working on two scripts — one with Margot Robbie, one without.
When asked directly about Depp's involvement in a sequel following the trial, Bruckheimer said, "Not at this point," but added, "the future is yet to be decided."
Depp's Legacy and Future Endeavors
Depp's performance as Sparrow in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He went on to appear in four sequels, the last of which was released in 2017. At the Cannes Film Festival, Depp debuted his first performance filmed after his trial, "Jeanne du Barry", in which he plays King Louis XV of France.
The future remains uncertain for Depp and Disney. However, one thing is clear: the actor's willingness to return to the studio that helped him create one of his most iconic roles.
Only time will tell if this potential comeback will become a reality.
