A Trial That Captured the World's Attention
The documentary aims to present a neutral overview of the infamous defamation case, which was dubbed as the world's first trial by TikTok.
The series will show both Depp and Heard's testimonies side-by-side for the first time, exploring the global media event and questioning the nature of truth and its role in modern society.
The documentary is directed by Emma Cooper, known for her work on Netflix's 2022 documentary "The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes."
The Verdict and Its Aftermath
The Virginia trial concluded on June 1, 2022, with a seven-person jury siding mostly with Depp. The actor won all three counts of defamation concerning a 2018 op-ed Heard wrote about coming forward with domestic abuse claims, even though she didn't mention him by name in the article.
Depp was awarded $10.35 million in damages, while Heard won one of her three defamation counterclaims and was awarded $2 million in damages.
In the months following the verdict, both parties made appeals.
However, in December, Heard confirmed that she and Depp reached a settlement and both dropped their appeals. As part of the settlement, Heard would pay Depp $1 million, which he would donate to charity.
